A Late Spring Adventure at Magee Marsh
Female Canada Warbler
Three Peaceful Nights at Oak Harbor State Park
I spend three nights camping at Oak Harbor State Park during my trip to Magee Marsh. The campground is quiet and close to some of the best birding in northwest Ohio. Each morning, I wake before sunrise, enjoy the cool air, and head toward the boardwalk with my camera ready. After a full day of bird photography, it feels wonderful to return to camp, cook dinner, and listen to the sounds of nature as the sun goes down. Camping nearby gives me plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed.
A Different Kind of Spring Migration
I visit later in the spring, after the peak of the famous warbler migration. Because of the timing, I see many female warblers instead of the bright males that often appear in photographs. I enjoy this just as much. Female warblers have soft colors and subtle beauty that deserve attention. Photographing them is a rewarding challenge because they blend so well into the fresh green leaves.
One of my favorite sightings is a beautiful Canada Warbler. I also spend time photographing several Yellow Warblers, including a wonderful moment with a Yellow Warbler feeding its baby. Watching a parent care for its young reminds me that migration season is also nesting season. These quiet family moments are every bit as meaningful as seeing colorful birds during migration.
Exploring with the Puddle Shuttle
One of the highlights of my visit is joining the Puddle Shuttle tour. The guides know exactly where to look for birds, and the experience takes me to places I would not have found on my own.
The tour rewards us with excellent views of brilliant Indigo Buntings. Their rich blue feathers seem to glow in the sunlight. We also find several Yellow Warblers, giving me more opportunities to photograph these cheerful little songbirds.
The wetlands are full of surprises. A group of American White Pelicans glides across the water, creating beautiful reflections. Later, a majestic Bald Eagle appears overhead. Watching such a powerful bird soar over the marsh is unforgettable and reminds me how important these wetlands are for wildlife.
Every Visit Brings Something New
Magee Marsh always offers something special, even later in the season. The birds may be different from those seen during peak migration, but the experience is just as rewarding. Between the peaceful campground at Oak Harbor State Park, the excellent Puddle Shuttle tour, and the chance to photograph nesting birds and wetland wildlife, every day brings a new memory.
As a bird photographer, I leave with full memory cards and an even greater appreciation for the beauty of late spring. Sometimes the quieter weeks reveal moments that many visitors miss, and those moments make the trip truly unforgettable.
